Feminist activist Nola Darwish lived an eventful life. She was raised in an Egyptian Jewish family, with a mother and father who chose to support the Egyptian people and converted to Islam. Her father was a member of the Egyptian Communist Party and a well-known lawyer who defended the rights of the working class, and her mother shared this life with him out of conviction. Her father was imprisoned several times over many years, and the entire family paid a heavy price for this choice. Nola Darwish imbibed a love of her homeland and always sided with those suffering from oppression and injustice, and with those who bravely confronted them.
After obtaining a BA in French Literature and Education, she worked as a French language teacher and lived in Cairo, Algiers, Prague, and Moscow. She met activists from many countries and participated in various forms of struggle. She participated in party life in Egypt and public work through civil society organizations to defend women's rights. She published articles defending human rights in general, and women's rights in particular, and she co-founded the New Woman Foundation.
It is a vibrant and inspiring biography of an Egyptian activist against the backdrop of the major changes that occurred in social, cultural, economic, and political life in Egypt from the 1950s until the January 2011 Revolution.
