Set in 1862, Emma Donoghue's novel follows a troubled nurse with a dark past who travels from England to a remote Irish village to investigate allegations regarding a young girl whose religious family claims she has gone without food for four months. This requires placing the girl under surveillance and calling in the experienced nurse to expose the secret. The surveillance period unfolds in an atmosphere of mystery, rejection and acceptance, religion and atheism between the nurse and the girl, two contrasting personalities leading each other towards different destinies.
