Babette is the most famous novel by the first American to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. The novel brilliantly and accurately depicts how humans become mere cogs in the grinding machine of social order, without realizing it. It is not through awareness alone that humans can free themselves from the grip of that system, but rather through tremendous effort that not many can expend. This novel bears the hallmarks of unique and creative literature. There is no better evidence of this than the Swedish Academy’s recognition of Sinclair Lewis, which awarded the Nobel Prize to him, citing his “powerful and imaginative description and his ability to create a new type of character with wit and humor.”
