Muslim Robinson Crusoe

The amazing biography of Fernand Lopes

Author's name: Abdul Rahman Azzam

In 1506, the Portuguese nobleman Fernão Lopes sailed with his country's army to India in search of honor and fortune. There, he converted to Islam, married a Muslim woman, and fought against his former countrymen. He was eventually captured, his nose cut off, and his right hand and left thumb severed in the midst of a mob as punishment for treason. He was then put on a ship to be taken back to Portugal, but he left them on the desolate island of Saint Helena (the same island the English later decided to exile Napoleon Bonaparte after his defeat). News of Lopes reached the King of Portugal, who dispatched a special ship to retrieve him. Lopes impressed the King and the Pope in Rome, and when the King offered him anything he wanted, he asked to be returned to Saint Helena!

This engaging book, skillfully translated into Arabic by the great translator Anwar Al-Shami, is both a thrilling historical adventure and a contemplation of the conditions of isolation. It tells a story of salvation during one of Europe's darkest periods and a tale of man's complex relationship with nature.
