Seven years after José Cadalso's passing, one of his publisher friends discovered a draft of this work among his papers. Recognizing its cultural and literary importance, he decided to publish it. The letters were subsequently published in the newspaper "Correo de Madrid," where they received great acclaim and astonishing popularity from readers, which encouraged the Sancha printing press to collect them into a single book.
This work was first published in 1789, nearly two and a half centuries ago. However, it does not merely offer a glimpse into the past; instead, it provides an accurate description of what we experience today and observe through the experiences of others. Were it not for the very archaic structures, reliance on meanings no longer in use, and words whose connotations have changed, one would assume it to be the work of a contemporary writer.
Perhaps Cadalso's choice of the "epistolary novel" format granted it a degree of fluidity that would not have been possible in any other format, and it also facilitated the transition between different viewpoints. The characters' names were not chosen randomly; the name "Gazel" was borrowed from the Moroccan ambassador, Sidi Hamed al-Ghazali, who visited Spain shortly before this work was written, while "Nuño Núñez" is the name of a Spanish hero who became famous in the ninth century.
