The Good Soldier revolves around the intertwined relationships between an American Protestant man named John Doyle and his manipulative, exploitative wife, Florence, on the one hand, and his friend, Edward Ashburnham, and his wife, Leonora, a strong woman who tries to control her husband's wildness, whims, and money, on the other hand, Edward, who does not hesitate to flirt with women all the time and to betray his friend.
Doyle's close relationships also seethe with stories of love, friendship, and madness, and are rocked by infidelity, conspiracy, and death.
The novel begins with the sentence "This is the saddest story I have ever heard" and the publishers suggested changing the title to Ford Maddox's ironic "The Good Soldier".
The novel was adapted into a 1981 television film directed by Kevin Billington, and then a stage production in the United States as part of the Masterpiece Theatre series.
