In a rural English village in the nineteenth century, little Pip lives a poor life with his cruel sister and her kind blacksmith husband. Fate leads him to meet a horrific fugitive, a wealthy, eccentric woman who lives in seclusion in a sunless house, and a beautiful, heartless girl. However, his life takes its inevitable course. Until a great fortune falls upon him from an unknown person, promising him great prospects. He leaves the blacksmith's shop to become a gentleman, sailing the waves of Victorian society, with difficulty recognizing himself and the world around him. In little Pip's journey from childhood to youth, Dickens, with his wonderful characterization, his sarcastic sense, his critical eye, and his ability to delve into the deepest human emotions, takes us to explore with him crime and regret, hope and despair, revenge and forgiveness, reality and fantasy, dream and illusion, seriousness and play, and the hidden chains that bind us to the past.
Great Expectations was first published in serial form between 1861 and 1862, but it remains one of the most popular novels ever written. Perhaps this is due to Dickens's ability to create timeless characters that have become an integral part of English literary heritage, but also because the themes he explored in the Victorian era are still relevant today; the emotions he explored are those of humanity in every age and place.
