A tragic poem by the English playwright William Shakespeare about the Scottish leader Macbeth, who assassinates his king, Duncan, to take the throne of Scotland in his place. Macbeth is Shakespeare's shortest tragedy and has no subplot involving any other character. Written sometime between 1603 and 1606, Shakespeare based the play lightly on the Scottish character of Macbeth, one of the kings of Scotland. The play has been adapted many times and has been adapted for film, opera, and television.
