Maid

Author's name: Stephenie Land

At 28, Stephenie Land's dreams of going to college and becoming a writer were quickly dashed when a summer fling turned into an unplanned pregnancy. Before long, she found herself an independent mother, scraping by as a maid to make ends meet. This memoir is a candid and masterful account of Land's years serving upper-middle-class American families as a "nameless specter," quietly sharing her clients' triumphs, tragedies, and darkest secrets. Driven by a desire to build a better life for her family, she cleaned by day and studied online at night, writing tirelessly while working toward her college degree. She wrote untold true stories about living on coupons and food stamps, about government subsidies that provided little more than housing, about the indifferent public servants who They insulted her for receiving the meager aid she was given. On top of all this, she wrote about chasing the illusion of the American dream from the poverty line, all while navigating society's deeply ingrained stigmas about the working poor. Handmaid's Memoir tells Stephanie's story, but it's not hers alone. It's an inspiring testament to the courage, determination, and unyielding strength of the human spirit.
