Secrets of Eloquence

Author: Abd al-Qahir al-Jurjani

This book is a modern scholarly edition of Asrar al-Balagha (Secrets of Eloquence), specifically the branch known as `ilm al-bayan (the science of rhetoric), a famous work by Al-Jurjani (died circa 1078) on Arabic rhetoric. Al-Jurjani is considered the founder of this science. In the traditional context, the science of rhetoric is divided into three interconnected sciences: ma'ani (semantics), bayan (eloquence), and badi' (figures of speech). Al-Jurjani's study on the stylistic and psychological importance of metaphor has been widely accepted by classical Arabic writers and continues to be a source of discussion and research in modern linguistics. The work is carefully organized. After defining a specific rhetorical figure and pointing out the differences between it and other types of metaphors, Al-Jurjani provides examples from the poems of prominent poets such as Abu Nuwas (756-814) and Al-Mutanabbi (915-965), as well as from proverbs and aphorisms. Al-Jurjani then explains the passages by referring to the structure of the metaphor. This edition was revised by the Lebanese-Egyptian reformer and publisher Muhammad Rashid Rida, and it is by no means the only published work of a known manuscript. Rida was a prominent advocate of the idea of modern Islam, believing that it should be rooted in its religious origins while simultaneously adapting to Western modes of expression. Neither Rashid Rida (as he is commonly known) nor his elder companion Muhammad Abduh are known for their interest in linguistic studies, so this textual edition is not frequently cited in common references. In his introduction, Rida states that his interest in the book Asrar al-Balagha stems from his desire to rescue contemporary Arabic literature from what he called the "illness" that had afflicted the language since the fifth Hijri century (12th century CE) and had impacted its study "to the point where it almost became one of the extinct languages." Rida discussed this problem with Abduh, and they jointly searched for manuscripts of Al-Jurjani's works in Medina, Tripoli (Lebanon), Baghdad, and Istanbul, and copied many of them. This edition is therefore the fruit of Rida's verification of various manuscript copies, and it contains many footnotes for different readings of the original, unfamiliar words, and other explanatory notes.
