More than twenty sultans ended their lives by assassination or execution, or their deaths were marred by suspicion of assassination.

Conspiracies and counter-conspiracies between the princes themselves, or between them and the sultans.

This is a small part of the toll of the turmoil in the Mamluk era, which spanned from 1250 AD to 1517 AD, and in which the law of the transfer of power was the rule of “rule for whoever prevails,” historically attributed to Sultan Al-Adil Al-Ayyubi.

We speak of this era ablaze with events, of the ends of the Mamluk sultans who perished by assassination, execution, or in battle to defend their thrones... of that long thread of Mamluk blood...
