Lubna Al-Qurtubi, a student of Ibn Rushd, took a risk and decided to accompany the Andalusian imam during his ordeal in the village of Alisana. She is one of many voices that writer Ibrahim Farghali enlists to recount the life of the Andalusian philosopher and jurist Abu al-Walid Ibn Rushd. He attempts to bridge this narrative with contemporary reality through the fictional character of an Egyptian academic named Saad al-Din Iskandar, who experiences a similar ordeal in the present.
Farghali tries to find imaginative links between two love stories, one between a teacher and his student, one of which takes place in Andalusia in the eleventh century, while the other takes place in the twenty-first century.
So why did Ibn Rushd's ordeal, which required his exile to the village of Alisana and the burning of his books on science, philosophy, and medicine, repeat itself nearly a thousand years later?
