How many political crises between many countries have become complicated and prolonged due to those countries' insistence on their positions, fearing a violation of lofty principles and diplomatic prudence! And how many times have those acute crises ended in peace and harmony thanks to impromptu mediators, without any leader losing face or the dignity of their people being compromised.
Many questions still linger in the minds of many – undoubtedly – about who was behind the shift in the stubborn positions of the Egyptians and the British during the Suez evacuation negotiations in 1954? And who overthrew Dr. Mossadegh's government in Iran? And how did the Nasserists establish their presence in Lebanon in 1985, under the watchful eyes of the US Sixth Fleet marines, who were enjoying Lebanon's warm sun and beaches? And why did Abdel Nasser refrain from striking Israel at a time when he was ready to do so, yet pushed his people into war when he was least prepared for it?
Historians, when documenting events, neglect to answer such questions and refrain from shedding light on them because they rarely know anything about their hidden aspects. Diplomats also neglect them in their memoirs, driven sometimes by security considerations, and at other times by the desire to avoid creating friction between governments and their peoples.
Thus, events remain buried, with no hidden aspect known, and no secret revealed to the public, except by sheer coincidence. Meanwhile, those who supervised their design and implementation remain behind the walls of their official departments, awaiting the opportune moment to lift the veil and expose their naked truth to the deceived peoples of this world.
However, Miles Copeland, the author of this book, despite the justifications for concealing what he knows of the secrets of the game of nations, found it necessary to write this book, which his diplomat friend chastised him for when he pushed his draft to him for attempting to reveal secrets that, in his opinion, should remain in the corners of oblivion so as not to tarnish the reputation of the American government and other governments in the eyes of their peoples.
To begin with, the author provides a picture of the American government's methods in dealing with internal matters and, more importantly, external ones. They are men who do their best to present themselves – in their writings – as optimistic and hopeful, but they are not. For example, when there is a conflict between the results of both external and internal administrations, the president tends to favor foreign relations over internal trends so that they do not become an obstacle to moving forward in maintaining the type and size of American foreign relations…
As a result, while it publicly refuses to interfere in the affairs of other countries, it seeks innovative methods outside its traditional apparatus to do so. The government then only needs to delineate the outlines and boundaries of the issue at hand, and then unleash several hidden forces to completely liquidate it, or remove its dangers, without the government officially getting involved in any of its aspects.
The critical moment begins when the hidden struggle starts between these forces and their counterparts in other countries, all suffering from the same common problem: showing integrity and honesty while harboring treachery, deceit, and the intention to manipulate nations and peoples.
Here, the author concludes his discussion of the American government's methods in managing its foreign affairs by saying: "Thus we arrive at the subject of this book, which I call 'The Game of Nations,' explaining that while most of this book revolves around the Middle East in general, and Egypt in particular, this is due to several factors, including: the opportunity he had to spend a considerable time, exercising many of those hidden roles as an impromptu mediator who would not be among the invited guests again. This is what he calls back-channel diplomacy, indicating that this type of diplomacy has a great impact, as seen in the behavior of the rulers of that region in their relations with the West, and the West's relations with them, which at first glance seemed to be behavior that good taste would abhor and sound logic would reject, and which, on the surface, dissipates divergent intersecting lines, no two of which are parallel.
Furthermore, the author considers this book a living example of history aimed at lifting the veil on the truth of the major powers' ties with countries of limited capabilities that sometimes succeeded in achieving diplomatic victories over some major powers and, over time, managed to play a role greater than their capacities in world politics; an example of this is the role of Gamal Abdel Nasser, President of the Egyptian Republic.
He returns to remind the reader not to assume that the errors and shortcomings that occurred in international American relations were the result of foolish decisions, revealing that they are in reality no more than a misunderstanding among senior officials of the essence of matters, or a misuse of innovative means to address issues that traditional means failed to resolve, which is evident in the American government's treatment of President Abdel Nasser.
The author concludes by saying, "And I will remain – as long as I can – honest in my description of events, slow at the turning points of people's history, avoiding the fabrication of news, no matter my duties and commitments."

Latest releases from Book Fanar
