Dialogues on Natural Religion

In 1761, the dialogues were completed as we read them now. Perhaps at that time, Hume wrote the opening address, as we read something new in this address. He tells us that the existence of God is a matter of clear certainty, and that it is a truth known in all ages. It is the foundation of human hopes and the pillar of morality and society. It is good for us to contemplate it at every moment of our lives. Hume mentioned all this to make the book appealing to us, but he did not fail to warn us of the difficulty we might encounter in understanding it. There are questions about the nature of God that are fraught with doubt, and the human mind has not yet arrived at certainty about them. However, they are such fascinating topics that we cannot prevent ourselves from constantly investigating them, even though we do not emerge from even the most delicate investigations without doubt, contradiction, and a lack of certainty.
