Here we are before the most important and greatest Russian work of the twentieth century, an ambitious literary epic, rivaling "War and Peace," a novel whose author died of sorrow for it after two KGB officers raided his home to confiscate all his papers, the manuscript of his novel, and even the ink ribbons, in a way that made everyone think it had disappeared forever. "I beg you to restore freedom to my book," Vasily Grossman addressed Nikita Khrushchev, the leader of the Soviet Communist Party, in February 1962, asking him to return the manuscript of his novel, but it was lost forever in the intelligence cellars due to (its danger to Soviet security), as it was more dangerous than "Doctor Zhivago," according to them. In the 1970s, a friend discovered the novel's manuscript with some of Grossman's loyal friends, smuggling it through the famous dissident Sakharov after microfilming it to be published in Switzerland in Russian first by the "L'Age d'Homme" publishing house, owned by a Russian intellectual, in 1980, and then translated into various languages of the world. But why should we read it? "Life and Fate," published by Dar Su'al, tells the story of Stalingrad between the autumn of 1942 and the spring of 1943, and through it, the story of the heroism of all Soviet peoples and the dual repression that faced those acts of heroism, in a style that combines Tolstoy's concept of goodness and Chekhov's portrayal of the human soul, in a clear human crucible, the writer knew how to combine small and large history, discussing what was happening in his country. In a classical style, he followed the pattern of his great predecessor Tolstoy's novel, making "Life and Fate" the "War and Peace" of the twentieth century.
