Love and depression are two essential, inseparable elements of the cultural narrative of emotions, or emotional life within contemporary societies. In addition to all this, the book offers insightful reflections on a range of social, psychoanalytic, and philosophical theories on love, depression, and passion, including the works of Georg Simmel, Arlie Hochschild, Anthony Giddens, Ulrich Beck, Eva Illouz, Zygmunt Bauman, Levinas, Sartre, Freud, Lacan, Kristeva, and others. The author also examines the ways in which depressive love is expressed in modern society, asking whether it is a new phenomenon limited to Western societies or extends beyond them, what characterizes depressive love, and what associated features it has in contemporary societies. This is a rich and theoretically wide-ranging study of depressive love.
