The novel's events take place in the city of Jeddah, covering the past forty years, and ending with the first day of the current Hijri year 1430. From the atmosphere of the novel, we read: "Have we taken precautions and been wary of what is on earth, so that we may remain safe from what is thrown at us from the sky! This is the great wisdom I have learned! And because of it, I have not been wary of any filth that may cling to me for the rest of my life. I have sought all the filthy paths and have taken their hump. This trait of filth is what brought me into the palace. Then, there was no choice but to remain immersed in my filth to learn another wisdom: "Every being hides in its own filth, and emerges from it pointing out the filth of others!" A humble wisdom that I encounter daily, and no one who wears it wants to be convinced that he is practicing stupidity, so I find in remembering it an exercise of additional stupidity in the noisy palace nights, the luxury cars crowd in the internal parking lots, and the servants in their embroidered suits turn into invisible creatures, as they move between the guests with drinks, fruits, and sweets of various kinds and shapes, moving without the eyes of the attendees touching them, the night is noisy, and the women have burned its edges with shaking their bodies, and their raging coquettishness, and heads are heavy, and the kneaded words remain burning on the flame of deferred desire
