The Mystery of Edwin Drood is Charles Dickens's last novel. The novel was unfinished at the time of Dickens's death, and Dickens's ending remains unknown. Although the novel is named after Edwin Drood, the story centers on his uncle, the church choirmaster and opium addict, John Jasper, who falls in love with his pupil, Rosa Bud, who was Drood's fiancée. Miss Bud also catches the eye of Neville Landless, a hot-tempered and ardent man who has come from Ceylon with his twin sister, Helena. Drood and Landless share a mutual dislike for each other. Drood later disappears under mysterious circumstances. The story is set in Cloisterham, which is based on Rochester. For example, the character Mr. Crisparkle lives in the churchhouse at Minor Canon Corner, which matches the real address within the precincts of Rochester Cathedral, Minor Canon Row.
