On a tranquil island, like a jewel in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, called Ratenga, the writer Ballantyne takes us in this novel, published in 1883, to witness the transformation of an island, one of the primitive Polynesian islands, from paganism to Christianity. Its people transformed from a primitive, pre-Christian, cannibalistic people to a people who love peace and brotherhood. This island was introduced to Christianity by the missionary Warunga, but the most important adventure that forms the core of the novel is the adventure of his missionary friend, Antonio Zeppa, who suffers from a mental disorder as a result of the incident in which his son was killed on a pirate ship, when they threw him into the ocean. From the island of Ratenga, Christianity spreads through Zippa, who, after the ill-fated pirate ship incident, is thrown by fate to another island, chosen by the pirate Roscoe, to place Zippa there after the blow he suffered on the ship. It is a remote island called "Sugar Loaf." Here begins Zippa's adventure as a madman on this island. He was a mad guest in their lands, wandering in the mountains, teaching children hymns that the inhabitants had not known before. However, he stops an eternal war between the Raturi and the mountain people, by calling them to forgiveness and liberation from the blood of the past and wiping their hearts with the light of guidance for peace. The incident of Orlando being thrown from the pirate ship constitutes a difficult turning point in the life of Antonio Zippa, making him like a madman who struggles with the trees that he imagines are demons that stole his dear son Orly. Zippa is a Christian who, when he had the opportunity to kill his enemy, the pirate Roscoe, who caused his son to be lost and displaced from his homeland, did not kill him, but saved his life from another murder attempt, and washed his angry heart with the light of forgiveness that Christ called for in the book
