I used to say in my teenage years, don't they abandon these rituals and long songs when drinking coffee?
Why don't they just drink Turkish coffee or Nescafe?
But I later realized that these rituals are an integral part of the culture of the Eritrean people who have emigrated from their homeland. These rituals allow them and enhance communication and intimacy between family members.
It is an opportunity to reminisce, remember anecdotes and connect with roots.
My father Al-Hijazi used to travel since his youth to a number of cities for the purpose of trade.
Asmara was one of them.
A friendship and love were born between him and that charming city, until he married one of its daughters.
Which later became one of the ladies of Mecca without abandoning the customs of its people

The visiting time passed quickly.. and the room returned to its previous state. After dinner, each patient took care of her various needs.
It was about half past eight.
After I perform the Isha prayer
I lay on my bed, covered with the blanket my mom had brought me.
The world is covered with the cloak of winter and rain. The cold of Mecca is rare, but it is as bitter as this night.
The women gathered around Manal's bed to drink Arabic coffee.
Hoda sits with her on the bed
Souad and Zainab sat on the chairs.
The smell of coffee permeated the room, overpowering the smell of medicine.
Which made me feel for a moment that I was sitting in a women's council
Souad called me saying:
- Come on Hanaa, drink the coffee that Manal's mother brought. It's delicious.
- No, thank you. - I said that despite my intense desire to drink it -
- Come on, it's winter and the night is long. Don't think you'll go to sleep like last night.
It was about half past eight.
