Poems and Maqamat

Author's name: Mohammed Al-Dhafiri

Poetry is linked to singing, and singing is based only on music. The great Al-A’sha, Maymun ibn Qays, was called the “cymbal of the Arabs” because he used to play a musical instrument called the “cymbal” in order to make the meter of the poetic verse correct.
And here is Imam Al-Suyuti - may God have mercy on him - linking poetry and singing through his saying: “There is no difference between the art of prosody and the art of rhythm, except that the art of rhythm divides time with melody, and the art of prosody divides time with audible letters.”
This understanding made modern criticism divide the poetic rhythm in the poem into external rhythm and internal rhythm, considering that poetry has a relationship with rhythm despite its difference from music, because poetry is connected to the metrical meters, while music is connected to the tonal rhythm.
One of the forms of melodic rhythms is the musical scale, which is an art of singing, as it depends on a special taste upon which the melodies are based, as it consists of a group of notes. It is not a single scale, but rather several scales, which no one can sense, distinguish, or know the tonal differences between them except those who are connoisseurs, students, or those with special artistic talents.
