One of the great paradoxes of life is that self-awareness breeds anxiety. The act of merging radically eliminates anxiety by eliminating self-awareness. A person who falls in love and enters a blissful state of merging does not reflect on himself because his lonely, questioning ego (and the anxiety associated with isolation) dissolves into the image of the "we." Thus, one separates oneself from one's anxiety, but loses oneself.
