Taha Hussein's book Pre-Islamic Poetry sparked a wave of criticism and debate that took on several intellectual, religious and literary aspects.
Some of the wild ideas contained in the book led to the author being accused of blasphemy and heresy. Since the approach of writers and thinkers in responding to their opponents is to counter argument with argument, and to present facts and ideas, several prominent thinkers rose up to refute what was contained in this book, and Al-Rafe’i was the most prominent among them, as he stood up to defend our ancient heritage and also exposed some of the fallacies mentioned by Hussein. The author based his defense on his wealth of Islamic culture, especially verses of the Holy Quran and its interpretation. This defense was under the banner of the Great Quran.
