In this novel, we get to know Orwell, the social critic who bitterly mocked the English class society and its traditions, and the church, its teachings, and its warring sects. Dorothy (the novel's heroine) cannot bear the harsh reality of living in a miserable, dilapidated church house, shared only with her by a widowed, miserly father who burdened her with the chores of the house and church. She had no help except a foolish maid... These monotonous, boring chores consume most of her time, causing her to suffer from memory loss and run away from home, finding herself in London. She travels with a group of vagrants to work on a farm in the countryside, and returns to London after her father abandons her, leaving her to face homelessness, the cold streets, and begging... When she returns to her father's house, she rejects the marriage proposal of the only man she loves and finds comfort in, because she suffers from a psychological complex resulting from the unsuccessful relationship between her father and mother, her strict religious upbringing, and her sick sense of duty.
