When he lifted the child from the sack, he found him completely deformed. Claude's affection for this ugliness grew. He vowed in his heart to raise this child out of love for his brother, thus atonement for Jahan's future sins. It was a small commodity of good deeds that he wanted to accumulate in advance, in case the little one should one day find himself lacking this one coin that would admit him to heaven. He baptized the adopted child and gave him the name Quasimodo, either to mark the day he had found him, or to emphasize how incomplete this poor little creature was. In reality, the one-eyed, hunchbacked, and shell-shocked Quasimodo was only an approximation.
