We decided to write the book you're holding after so many parents asked for more examples and strategies to use with very young children—challenging twos, mischievous threes, nasty fours, impetuous fives, self-centered sixes, and occasionally polite sevens. This book represents everything I learned growing up, plus additional insights to help us move forward as parents in the 21st century. Part of that process was collaborating with my childhood friend, Julie King, who encouraged me to lead when I felt I was still finding my way. The following work contains my and Julie's reflections, as well as those of all the parents and teachers who confided in us and shared their stories. This book comes in two parts. Part one covers the basic tools you'll be glad you have in your toolbox when your little one goes off the rails. Part two covers the challenges we've found to be most common in early childhood; Eating, dressing, leaving the house, stopping hitting, and sleeping! This section shows how parents in our groups used these tools in different and uniquely creative ways. We hope this book will provide you with a wide range of ideas to explore and draw upon when you feel like you've run out of ideas.
