Love! It's a simple thing, isn't it? You love your family and friends, and they love you back. You find a life partner who you love, and who loves you back; you don't even have to try to love them because it happens without our intervention. All of that is true, but since you're reading this book, you already know for sure that love is much more complicated than that.
Love between people is always complicated; this is because people are complex, and love can be tried, tested, and taken to its limits. Sometimes we love the wrong person, and we may love too much or not enough. We may feel it but not know how to express it. We may think our love is enough, when in fact it isn't. We may struggle to find it—or doubt whether we've found it. Sometimes we think it's still there, but we feel it slipping away from us and we don't know how to get it back.
