Use Your Head: How to Unleash the Power of Your Mind
Author's Name: Tony Buzan
Imagine you're an Olympic athlete, physically fit, incredibly flexible, and in good cardiovascular health... and suddenly you fall into a swamp or quicksand. What should you think? Surely you'd think that the solution to get out of this situation is to harness your Olympic energy. What would happen to you if you did that? You'd quickly sink.
And herein lies the rub, as Shakespeare says; herein lies the crux of the problem. As smart, strong, and alert as you may be, you—an Olympian—will sink because you haven't applied the right thinking to the challenge you face. You will sink in spite of your efforts, or perhaps because of them. This is what many of us do when it comes to using our brains; without realizing it, we don't know how to access and utilize their immense power.
This book has been written to help you understand how to harness the power of your brain successfully, no matter the challenge you face. I call this book your brain's "operations manual." It's designed to help you fuel your "biological supercomputer" and unleash the extraordinary array of natural mental skills you possess .
Let me now tell you a simple story about how I came to develop this “brain guide ”…
I was in college, my grades were low, my confidence was low, and the work I had to do was piling up, so in my desperation, I went to the library and spoke to the librarian (in a low voice) :
I said, "I need a book on how to use my brain ."
She said
" The medical department is over there. "
I said
" I don't want to have surgery on my brain, I want to learn how to use it ."
She said
" Oh, there are no books about this ."
And that was the beginning
And I thought, how cool is this? If you were to buy a laptop, a mobile phone, or any other PDA, what would you take with it?
Instruction manual (either in printed form or available online) .
So where is the instruction manual for the most important piece of equipment imaginable? There was none, but today it is, and I am pleased to present to you the much-needed operations manual for the brain—this book.
In 1974, the BBC broadcast my ten-part television series, Use Your Head , which formally introduced my original concept of the Mind Map® to the world for the first time. This book was the "source" and "foundation" of my series of books about the brain, which later included Speed Reading, The Memory Book , and The Mind Map Book. The television series was repeated regularly for ten years, and the book of the same name became a worldwide bestseller, contributing to my and my seminars becoming extremely popular worldwide.
In the late 1970s, the first success stories were recorded—especially the amazingly inspiring story of Edward Hughes. In the early 1980s, the first of a series of remarkable lectures was presented to large groups of students. One of the most notable lectures was the Soweto 2000 event in Johannesburg, South Africa, when 2,000 teenagers from the Soweto township voluntarily attended a remarkable three-day lecture named after this book.
