Investigator's Introduction
This book became known under the name: “Adab al-Dunya wa al-Din” and was printed more than once, whether by the professor as an editor or not, and no one took care of this subject, except Mustafa al-Saqa, who pointed out in the introduction to the edition he edited that on one of the manuscript copies on which he relied the name of the book was: “The Higher Ranks in the Etiquette of Religion and the World,” and yet he named the book “Adab al-Dunya wa al-Din.” Imam al-Subki said in Tabaqat al-Shafi’iyya (5/267) - in the biography of Imam al-Mawardi -: The author of “Al-Hawi” and “Al-Iqna’” in jurisprudence and “Adab al-Din wa al-Dunya.” Omar Reda Kahala said in “Mu’jam al-Mu’allifin” (2/499): “Among his writings: Adab
Religion and the world.
I mentioned it and disagreed with Ibn al-Imad in Shudharat al-Dhahab (21/5) and called it: “The Etiquette of the World and Religion.” So I preferred the name that the three versions that I relied on agreed upon.
Investigation, and God is the helper.
Investigation method
In order to write my article, taking into account the requirements of scientific investigation, such as comparing handwritten and printed copies, correcting the text, placing punctuation marks, dividing the text, and so on, I did the following:
1 - The author - like other writers and jurists, who do not care about memorizing the Prophet's hadiths - relied on many hadiths that have no basis, are fabricated, or are very weak, or he narrates the hadith by meaning. Our brother, Sheikh Tariq bin Abdul Wahid, has extracted the hadiths with a scientific chain of transmission and conveyed the opinions and rulings of previous and contemporary scholars on them, in terms of their authenticity and weakness. May God reward him with good.
Etiquette of religion and life
2 - I have authenticated the sayings, wisdom, proverbs and poems as much as possible, as many of them are attributed to more than one speaker. This authentication increases the value of the investigation, as it is a verification of what the author transmits from others. If he attributes it to its speaker, then the phrase is corrected if there is a flaw in it. If he does not attribute it, I point that out in the footnote that this meaning is attributed to so-and-so. I followed this approach in all my investigation work, such as the investigation of the book “Al-Targhīb wa’t-Tarhīb” by Al-Hafiz Al-Mundhiri and the investigation of the book “Fayd Al-Qadir” by Imam Al-Munawi. Although it was an additional effort and arduous work, it is a deeper documentation of the work. In this approach, I followed eminent scholars who preceded us in this field, so may Allah reward them:
3- I have provided a brief translation of all the authors of the sayings, wisdom, and poems in the book, then followed up with the sources of the translation for those who wanted more information. This translation also has an impact on documenting the text and verifying the authenticity of the authors of these texts. - I have created the following indexes:
- Indexes of Quranic verses.
-Indexes of the hadiths of the Prophet.
- Indexes of monuments, wisdom and proverbs.
Indexes of poetry
Indexes of translated men.
Index of topics.
