A book about the virtue of patience and gratitude, written by Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya. The book deals with sayings from the interpretation of the Holy Quran and noble prophetic hadiths attributed to their sources, and issues of jurisprudence established with evidence and behavioral subtleties on the right path, the knowledge of which is not hidden from anyone who thinks and prepares his mind. Ibn Qayyim says at the beginning of this book: “Since faith is two halves: half patience and half gratitude, it is true for whoever advises himself, loves his salvation and prefers his happiness, not to neglect these two great principles.” Therefore, this book was written to highlight the great need and necessity for them, and to explain that the happiness of this world and the hereafter depends on them. It came as a comprehensive, inclusive and beneficial book.
Salim bin Eid al-Hilali commented on it and transmitted its hadiths.
the introduction
All praise is due to Allah. We praise Him, seek His aid, and ask for His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evils of our own souls and the wickedness of our deeds. He whom Allah guides, none can misguide, and he whom He misguides, none can guide.
I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. Now then:
Faith is made up of two halves: half gratitude and half patience. This is because what a servant encounters is of two types:
First: The blessings that God has bestowed upon His servant, both outwardly and inwardly. He needs to remember them, thank them, and speak of God’s blessings upon him in them. He should not rely on them or become engrossed in them, and he should take into account rights, giving each person his due. This is the station of gratitude.
Second: The calamities that befall the servant, taking away loved ones, wasting wealth, weakening the body, and defeating the pleasures and desires that have been made attractive to people. He needs to receive them with contentment, not to be impatient, discontented, or complaining, and to await relief and compensation from Allah. This is the station of patience. Since this is the case, it is true for whoever advises himself, loves his salvation, and prefers his happiness not to neglect these two great principles, nor to deviate from these two straight paths, but to make his journey to Allah between these two paths, so that Allah may make his meeting on the Day with the better of the two groups.
In order for the argument to be clear and the path to be straight for those seeking the highest, it is necessary to have the two highest stations and the two most sublime objectives. So I came across the book “‘Uddat al-Sabireen wa Dhakirat al-Shakireen” by the second Sheikh of Islam and the divine Imam Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya. I found that he had gathered the details of these two issues in a comprehensive manner that had never been done before and had never been done after him. I found it to be a comprehensive educational encyclopedia on the stations of religion and degrees of certainty, and I was certain of the truthfulness of its author in his description of it when he said:
So it came as a comprehensive, comprehensive, and beneficial book, in which there are benefits that are truly worthy of being grasped with the molars and praised with the little fingers; enjoyable for its reader, frank for the one looking at it, entertaining for the sad, arousing for the negligent and inciting for the eager, including fine anecdotes from the interpretation of the Qur’an and prophetic hadiths attributed to their sources, and Salafist traces attributed to their speaker, and fine jurisprudential issues established by evidence and behavioral subtleties in the right way, and knowledge of that is not hidden from whoever thinks and prepares
Mentioning the types of patience, aspects of gratitude and its types.
And he resolved the dispute over the preference between the grateful rich and the patient poor, and he mentioned the reality of the world and how God, His Messenger, and the righteous predecessors used it as examples, and he spoke about the course of these examples and their conformity to the reality of the situation, and he mentioned what is blameworthy in the world and what is praised, and what brings one closer to God and distances oneself from it, and how it makes those who are miserable and makes those who are happy happy.
And other benefits that you can hardly find in any other book. This is God’s bounty upon His servant and a gift from among His gifts. It is a book suitable for kings, princes, the rich, the poor, Sufis, and jurists. It encourages the one who is sitting to travel, comforts the one who is traveling on the path, and alerts the traveler to the intended destination. (1)
I saw it with my own eyes, and seeing it through is not like seeing it. This great Imam and great man, with his pure intentions and clear heart and nature, is advancing forward to be among the people of steadfastness and initiative, not discouragement and reluctance. He was the eminent knight in that, and his share of precedence was the highest, so it was necessary for our brothers in faith to share with us this sweetened religious taste. So I sought God’s guidance to bring it out of its slumber so that it may see the light, and so that the people of patience and gratitude may increase in joy and happiness through it, so that the incubators of divine faith education may return among the Muslims of our time to follow in the footsteps of the Salaf, so that we may succeed as they succeeded, and we may win and prosper as they won and prospered. For this nation will not be reformed except by that upon which its beginnings were reformed, and our righteous predecessors were saved by asceticism and certainty.
God speaks the truth and guides to the right path.
Book publications and their evaluation:
The book has been printed in several editions, including:
Printed in 1341 AH at Al-Imam Press in Egypt.
It was printed in 1349 AH at the Salafi Press in Egypt.
Then the editions were published in Egypt and Lebanon.
Many of these editions have found deficiencies in the original book, and there are overlapping phrases in most places, and a direction of the author’s words that takes him away from his intended meaning and purpose, leading to a flawed understanding and a false opinion. Quarries of understanding are empty, and therefore it was necessary to verify and correct the texts of this book, and to graduate its hadiths and traces and clarify their degrees of authenticity and weakness in service of knowledge and loyalty to its people
* My work in investigation:
I wrote my pen on the book:
1 - Copies and comparison of two handwritten copies:
The first is in the Egyptian National Library, No. 2159, Religious Ethics, and it is 153 pages, each page has approximately 25 lines, and each line has 10 words. It is written in clear Naskh script. At the end of it is a comment by the poorest of mankind, the prisoner of his sins, and the most needy of Allah’s servants for His forgiveness, mercy, kindness, pleasure, and pardon, Abd al-Rahman bin Abd al-Aziz Al Uwaid, on Saturday morning in the month of Allah, Dhu al-Qi’dah, in the year 1313 AH, of the migration of our Prophet Muhammad, may God bless him and his family and companions and grant them peace in abundance. The speech on
And I symbolized it with "M".
Second: An Iraqi copy on microfilm brought by one of our brothers, a student of knowledge in Baghdad. I have coded it "Ḍaḥ."
I did that - that is, the interview - repeatedly, to avoid omissions or errors.
Or illusion and distortion. I have established the differences between the two versions in the footnote.
2 - To control its texts, to make it easier for the reader to understand them. This includes:
A - Vowelization of words with letters and vowels.
B - Explanation of the strange.
T - Divide the book into paragraphs as required by the meaning, taking into account punctuation marks.
3 - I attributed the verses to their places in the Book of God by mentioning their number and surah, and I placed them next to them, and I was careful to have them in the Uthmanic script.
4- I have extracted the hadiths mentioned in the book, and explained their levels according to what is required by the rules of the hadith industry, relying on the statements of the scholars who have been well-established in this art, both ancient and modern. And whatever of them was in the two Sahihs, or one of them, I was satisfied with attributing it to it, because that indicates its authenticity unless some scholars have stated otherwise.
Simple letters
5- The effects and poems included in the book were extracted to the best of my ability and capacity.
6- I translated the names of the prominent figures mentioned in the book. May God have mercy on him.
7 - I commented on some of the points that are difficult for the reader to understand, or that contain a correction to the author.
8- I have written an intermediate translation of the author, explaining his scientific status, the value of his books and letters, and his impact on Islamic sciences.
9 - Scientific and analytical indexes were created so that the student of knowledge can easily access its benefits and easily pick up what he needs, which are:
A - Index of Quranic verses arranged according to the surahs.
B - Index of the parts of the hadiths of the Prophet, arranged alphabetically.
T - Index of the works arranged according to their authors.
Th - Index of narrators and biographies. C - Index of places, countries and regions. H - Index of poetry.
K - Index of sects, groups, and tribes.
Index of scientific benefits.
Index of sources and references.
