Did my mother predict her own death the day she drew my name in red? Did she want to die so that her fear of death would end? Did she want to run to what awaited her instead of waiting for it, to know the truth: where will we go and where have those we love gone? It's not that I haven't thought about death, my death. But despite my loneliness and my petrified relationship with the people closest to me, I considered the desire to die a relinquishment of a basic right to exist, a right I could cling to after it was taken from me against my will, against everything—my right to be a daughter, to have a mother like others. This book is a splittime novel. The first time period depicts the Lebanese Civil War, where the protagonist tries to remember her story with her mother, who left her to marry someone other than her father and settled in Japan, before returning back to Beirut. The second time period portrays the present, where the protagonist experiences romantic relationships with people involved in this war she curses. Inbetween, the mother is murdered, leaving behind a painting for her daughter, who became an artist just like her. Consequently, and through her search for the lost painting, the daughter is also searching for her mother's killer, after spending her childhood searching for her mother's affection when the latter was alive. The novel's strength lies in the plot, as the perpetrator remains unknown until the last pages.
