Hachette Antoine, under the Noufel imprint, exclusively publishes the works of Mikhail Naimy, one of the most prominent contemporary Arab writers and Lebanese diaspora writers. His writings are characterized by their attempts to purify Arabic literature of embellishments and superfluous language, and to draw closer to depicting the reality of things and events. His style is characterized by simplicity, clarity, and frankness, and by its avoidance of exaggeration, especially in description, narration, and imagery. His vocabulary sometimes seems closer to the colloquial dialect, which increases the desire of readers of all ages to read his books. This collection of proverbs, sayings, and wisdom, published in Naimy's late eighties, represents the final chapter of his oeuvre before he set his pen free and devoted himself, until his sunset at the age of ninety-nine, to the hidden phenomena of life and death, beyond the reach of pen and beyond the grasp of words. Even this collection itself is not a work of composition in the usual sense, as when a writer sits at his desk with a written task in mind that he is focused on producing. Rather, it is, as its name suggests, flashes or gleams that suddenly appear in the mind like lightning. No sooner do they flash than they disappear, and their author, who may be far from a pen or paper at that moment, has no idea how or why they came about. Often, a single flash, burdened by nine decades, as is the case with Na'ima here, carries enough to occupy an entire book; like its counterpart, lightning, which, as soon as it flashes and disappears, causes a torrent of rain showers.
