The End of the Desert — One autumn day in 1988, Zakia Zaghwani found a body lying at the edge of the desert and began her search for the story behind her death. As they investigate those involved in the singer's murder, the locals discover that their involvement extends far beyond a crime.
The War of Independence casts its shadow over the remote Algerian city, preserving the martyrs who represent the image of independence and liberation, while the darker side of those who remain is revealed. Without revealing the details, the outlines of multiple perpetrators emerge in a society rife with violence: former prisoners, the offspring of the Saâda bourgeoisie, the most extreme forms of murder... young and old. The novel is set in a desert town in Algeria in 1988. As with Khatibi's previous novels, this one is distinguished by its exceptionally tightly woven plot, which revolves around the murder of a singer at a tavern. A complex investigation begins, and the detectives struggle to reach a definitive conclusion, as the suspects multiply. Through the voices of the narrators, the protagonists of the story, the author delves into the history of colonialism, the history of the Algerian War of Independence, and its aftermath, by recounting the circumstances of the case, which unfolds over a single month, despite its intricacies. The characters accused of the singer's murder are not merely charged with a criminal act; they are also revealed to be involved in the great legacy of the war, each from a different perspective.
