Hachette Antoine, under the Noufel imprint, exclusively publishes the works of Mikhail Naimy, one of the most prominent contemporary Arab writers and Lebanese diaspora writers. However, the smitten Al-Arqash soon discovers in love those two opposing worldly poles that conflict within the human soul, and he is crucified between them: we love and so we transcend, and we dry up and dry up our soul until we almost touch the throne of God. We desire, so we become more and more fleshly and dense until we reach the level of animals in our debauchery.
Al-Arqash slaughters his virgin on their wedding night, and as a result of the shock, he suffers amnesia. He knows nothing about himself except that he is a speechless servant in a Syrian restaurant in New York, writing his memoirs in a wooden box behind the kitchen where he used to stay every night. Na'eem takes Al-Arqash as a mask through which he expresses, in the form of memoirs, the essence of the experiences he had been simmering within himself while he was still in the prime of his youth in New York City (1916-1932).
