This is not Mahmoud Asher's first novel about Palestine, nor will it be his last. The Palestinian writer never tires of delving into memory, of exploring the corridors of the Nakba's history, and of humanizing it. He recounts the customs and daily lives of a people who lived a peaceful existence interwoven with Bedouin legends, and chronicles their first encounter with civilization and... the intruding occupier, all within the engaging narrative framework of Yoshirq. In this novel, the writer reflects on the spiritual history of a Bedouin clan in Palestine, conveying its profound potential to harness folk legends and their powerful constitutional force in shaping people's souls, anxieties, fears, joys, and sorrows. Four elements pass through the clan and shake its life: the small inventions introduced to it by one of its members, the English people who arrive at their pastures after the departure of the Turks, the city of Jerusalem which the men and women will visit at first before settling in its suburbs, and finally they face the ominous fate that awaits their homeland, when they discover that they are part of a nation with its own cities, villages, dreams, and longing for freedom.
