Three voices are present in this novel. The first is that of Sheikh Abdul Rahman, directly from Najaf to southern Lebanon. The second is that of his friend Antoine, a poet searching for his identity between society and the city, torn between his Protestant roots and his existentialist leanings. A third voice is that of Grace, whom he loved, and Donnar, who chose otherwise. The events unfold in Lebanon until the very end, finally in a village called "Wasel Tawil," where Muslims and Christians lived side by side for a time, before the war began. The horrors of the Lebanese army unfolded intensely, but through the personal stories of heroes who preferred to fight their own battles on the front lines of the larger war. Three voices are present in this novel. The first is that of Sheikh Abdul Rahman, who returned from Najaf to southern Lebanon. The second represents his friend Antoine, a poet searching for his identity between the village and the city, between his Protestant roots and his existentialist leanings.
Between the two, a third voice emerges: Grace, who loves them both but is torn between them. The story unfolds in Lebanon in the late 1970s, specifically in the friendly village of Wasel, where Muslims and Christians lived side by side for a long time before the entrenchments of war suddenly erupted between them. The scourge of the Lebanese Civil War is vividly present, but from a personal perspective, through the individual stories of protagonists who chose to fight their own battles on the margins of World War I.
