Frédéric Chopin is not the hero of this novel, but he is its spirit, appearing in it as a passerby among passersby. Joseph, the Jew spared by Nazi death in Poland, inhabited Chopin's house, and Chopin inhabited his spirit. Later, the wandering Jew would abandon Warsaw, a city faltering in its memory, and would refuse to belong to a newly created homeland that turned his fellow victims into executioners. He would end up in distant Beirut, where he would reside and create something resembling a family. A family of which only a grandson would remain. Joseph, whose fingers would once again play, on another land and in another time, the melody of death. This is a novel about a hero in a time when the meanings of heroism were distorted, and about a grandson who inherited the spirit of a musician and the tenderness of a victim, and was torn between two homelands, two identities, and... more than two women. Joseph inherited all the questions of identity from his grandfather. He inherited from him the wandering, just as Beirut inherited from Warsaw.
