The thinker, short story writer, and poet Mikhail Naimy was born in Baskinta, at the foot of Sannine, in 1889. He continued his studies in Palestine and then in Russian Ukraine, before settling in the United States, where he earned degrees in literature and law. He founded the Pen League, along with some of his diaspora contemporaries. In 1932, he returned to Baskinta, where he spent his time writing and earned the nickname "The Hermit of Shkhroub" for the mystical bent and philosophical vision that characterized his literary output. He died in 1988 at the age of 99, having enriched the Arabic library with dozens of books in various literary, philosophical, and poetic fields. In "Margins," a collection of stories and articles, the Hermit of Shkhroub explored life's horizons in his usual way, plumbing its depths and revealing its secrets with his uniquely unique style. In it he says: “That world, as vast as it is, is no wider than you, fool. Indeed, it is to you as a waterwheel is to the sea. If you were not wider than it in your thought and imagination, you, a dwarf in body, would not have been eager to penetrate its dimensions, solve its mysteries, and subjugate it to your will. You are the greatest. And it is the smallest. You are the everlasting. And it is destined to perish.”
