Two suns on the Nile

From childhood, Shams El-Din's journey toward his identity begins. His spirit grows unnoticed by his rebellious body, leaving his name behind and crossing from Sudan to the other side of the Nile. There, he becomes a woman named Shams. Shams's new life begins in Cairo. She experiences long waits with colleagues who refuse to cooperate with international organizations, and she meets healthcare workers who share their dreams and identities, waiting for their needs to be met before they run out. In the vastness of Cairo, Shams encounters the memory of Shams El-Din more than once. She remembers the "Sudanese Zorba" of her university days, and on another occasion, she recalls her mother's tenderness and her father's harshness. But what always accompanies her is the voice of Maryam, the grandmother with whom Shams spent her early days, and who herself lived her life as a victim of patriarchal empowerment, before dying a victim of colonialism. In the vast city of Cairo, Shams finds herself remembering Shams El-Din on many occasions. Sometimes she recalls "Zorba the Sudanese" from their university days, and other times she remembers her mother's tenderness and her father's harshness. But the voice that constantly accompanies her is that of Maryam, her grandmother, with whom she shared her childhood. Maryam suffered the hardships of a patriarchal society and fell victim to colonialism before her departure.
