All faces, paths, and memories lead to one destination: the Al-Nahhas neighborhood in Damascus. The narrator is now in London, but the past has not left his mind. He turns there to seek respite from the news of the bloody fighting that has plagued Syria during its long war. The war has shattered what remained of the dreams of an entire generation of underground activists and rebels who, decades ago, were met with prison cells, exile, and security persecution when they dared to dream of freedom, or "azadi" in Kurdish.
It all begins when the narrator meets a young woman at an English airport. The flowing narrative, often spoken by the hero, doesn't always distinguish between the young woman's face and that of her mother, his former lover Wafaa. The young woman's face takes him to her mother's, and Wafaa takes him back to their years together in the Copper Avenue neighborhood, in the closed rooms that were once home to love, dreams, and passionate discussions... All faces, roads, and memories lead only in one direction: Damascene Copper Avenue. The narrator lives in London now, but the past lives on in his memory. He finds refuge in it to take a break from the news of the bloody killings that afflicted Syria during its long war. The war scattered what was left of an entire generation of secret militants and rebels' dreams, who ended up in prison, exiled, or prosecuted by security forces, decades ago, when they dared to dream of freedom, or “Azadi” in Kurdish.
