I recall with some surprise the actions of Abdul Azim Shodak, the lame, nearly deaf mechanic in his forties, who was once found inside the delivery room, his skin smelling of grease and old engine oil. He was wearing thin reading glasses, available anywhere, and a cracked stethoscope around his neck, apparently found in one of the open, unattended offices. On his right hand, he wore a thick rubber glove, never used in gynecological examinations, but usually by sewer workers and in homes, to protect their hands when washing pots and dishes. He moved among the patients, drowned in pain and blood, as an obstetrician and gynecologist. He monitored the place until he was absolutely certain that no nurse, midwife, or doctor was present, and then he entered. Unfortunately for him, one of the roommates, whose name was Tamador, if I remember correctly, was from his neighborhood and lived a street away. She recognized him as soon as she saw him and screamed, mixing her screams with the pain of labor: “Shudak... Shudak the mechanic. Shudak!” I remember, quite in schock, what Abdelazim Shudak, the forty-year-old crippled and almost deaf mechanic did. He was found once inside the delivery room, emanating the smell of grease and old engine oils. He wore a pair of eyeglasses with thin lenses similar to those used for reading, easily available anywhere. A cracked medical stethoscope hung around his neck, which he apparently found in one of the unattended offices. In his right hand, he held a thick rubber glove that was never used for gynecological examinations but rather commonly used by sewage workers, as well as in households to protect hands while washing utensils and dishes. He moved among the agonized and bloodied patients, assuming the role of an obstetrician gynecologist. He carefully observed the area to make sure there were no nurses, midwives, or doctors present, and then entered.

However, to his misfortune, one of the patients in the room, whose name I recall as Tamader, was from his neighborhood and lived just a street away. She recognized him as soon as she caught sight of him and screamed, her screams blending with the pains of labor, “Shudak... Shudak the mechanic. Shudak!”
