Hachette Antoine, under the Noufel imprint, exclusively publishes the works of Mikhail Naimy, one of the most prominent contemporary Arab writers and Lebanese diaspora writers. His writings are characterized by their attempts to purify Arabic literature of embellishments and superfluous language, and to draw closer to depicting the reality of things and events. His style is characterized by simplicity, clarity, and frankness, and avoids exaggeration, especially in description, narration, and imagery. His vocabulary sometimes seems closer to the colloquial dialect, which increases the desire of readers of all ages to read his books. Mikhail Naimy represents a unique humanist school and a luminous school of thought among the noblest schools of Arab and international humanist thought.
This dramatic novel is Mikhail Naimy's debut play, drawn from the heart of our Eastern life. It offers a brilliant presentation and precise analysis of the ever-present problems between the old and new generations, set in an engaging dialogue that blends seriousness and humor, captivating the viewer or reader.
The first edition appeared in New York in 1917, but was quickly sold out and unavailable. However, as soon as we published a new, revised edition, demand for it increased. Today, we publish the thirteenth edition, confident that we are presenting readers not only with the rich human richness they have become accustomed to in Na'ima's later works, but also with the first authentic theatrical work by an Arab writer.
