He worked in the iron and steel industry, then in construction, which provided him with the environment to set up his own company in 1977, from which he retired in 1996. He is married with two daughters and two sons from his first wife and six grandchildren. He enjoys playing tennis, ballroom dancing, playing the piano, and gardening. The Matabei Contract is Gavin's first novel.
