He was from Persia, who was accused of heresy and became increasingly agitated after his death. His book “Al-Adab al-Saghir wa al-Adab al-Kabir” is a book of great value and immense benefit. In it, Ibn al-Muqaffa delivers a sound and penetrating view of human life as a whole, in its interactions and morals, literature, livelihood, and thoughts. He then promotes good deeds and good manners, and reinforces the ambitions of ambitious people with far-reaching aspirations. He encourages righteousness, piety, and forbearance in every new endeavor a person undertakes and in every word he utters. He elevates the status of reason and wisdom, and protects even the most pious from excess and falling into recklessness, rashness, and passion. He addresses the mind with his sublime ideas just as he addresses the heart with his refined, eloquent, and gentle language. A flowing, calm style, like the sea breeze, devoid of affectation or embellishment. The rough seas don't tempt you to reach your goal, but rather convey its meanings within the confines of its premises. Therefore, the book is of great value, especially given that it sheds much light on the literature of an important phase of our Arabic literature, within the framework of prose and correspondence, on many aspects of literature, from meetings with kings and governors to the simplest aspects of life.

Diwan of Al-Kumait bin Maruf Al-Asadi

Author's name: Al-Kumait bin Maruf Al-Asadi

A collection of poetry by the Arab poet Al-Asma'i, Al-Kumait ibn Ma'ruf Al-Asadi. However, they differ on other matters. The information recorded about his life is very shallow, and is fraught with myth and confusion. The correct information hardly goes beyond mentioning his name. Laqeet lived during a period of Arab fervor during the pre-Islamic era, and his memory is associated with raising the status of the Arabs. He embodied the spirit of Arab nationalism and sacrificed himself to liberate his people from a treacherous, attacking enemy. He was the first martyr to give his life cheaply for the sake of Arab freedom and dignity. Laqeet composed his first and only poem more than 1,600 years ago while imprisoned. His emotions were at the height of their turmoil and violence. This poetic letter is considered the first literary text in the art of correspondence. This book includes a biography of Laqeet bin Ya'mar Al-Ayadi, his poetry collection, and three handwritten copies of his collection, photocopied from their preserved originals.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0603/9335/7466/files/471502517_122150952380372364_3907276815117974768_n.jpg?v=1754858071
9789953134222
Diwan of Layla al-Akhiliya

Diwan of Layla Al-Akhyaliya

Author's name: Laila Al-Akhiliya

Layla Al-Akhiliya is a prominent poet of the Umayyad era… an eloquent woman who visited the caliphs and governors of that era, representing her people… The story of her love for Tawbah in her youth and her love for him was famous among the Arabs. It is well known that al-Khansa' was one of the most advanced poets of the Arabs, as all ancient poets and narrators agreed that there was no woman before or after her more eloquent than her in elegies, and they considered her to be in the second rank. At the beginning of her career, al-Khansa' used to write poetry, but it did not increase until her two brothers, Mu'awiyah and Sakhr, were killed. She grieved deeply for them, especially Sakhr, as he was the dearest to her, because of his patience, generosity, advancement in his tribe, courage, and handsome face. Grief tore open the sleeves of her poetic talent, and she composed poetry that was the sighs of a piercing soul, the sighs of a chest afflicted with grief, and the tears of a wounded heart. The reader of this poetry and its sighs will discover the simplicity and repetition of its meanings, and its exaggeration in describing her sadness and the virtues of her brother Sakhr. Her poetry is beloved and close to hearts, with its sincere, burning, and pained emotion and true brotherly loyalty. This book contains within its folds the collection of poems by Al-Khansa, arranged alphabetically, titled with titles taken from the poem itself, and explained in an easy and simplified style that guarantees the reader a grasp of all the meanings intended by Al-Khansa in her poetry, which is predominantly elegiac in nature mixed with pride.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0603/9335/7466/files/a162077ac6d45185415cf30b2583a836_74cf852e-e10f-4609-8568-39d45b39e589.jpg?v=1752055693
9789953132464
The misers

The misers

Author's name: Al-Jahiz

Al-Jahiz is Abu Uthman Amr ibn Bahr al-Jahiz, from around Kinanah. He was short in stature, had a stern face, and was ugly in appearance. He was nicknamed al-Jahiz because of his bulging eyes. However, his lightheartedness, charming conversation, pleasant manner, and natural sense of humor helped to conceal his ugliness, making people flock to his company to enjoy his conversations and amuse themselves with his witty jokes. He collected some of them in his book “Al-Bukhala’”, in which he portrayed misers in the best way. He did not take his misers from the depths of history, but he took them from his environment and specifically mentioned among them the misers of Basra, his country, and the misers of Khorasan, especially its capital, Merv. He named the misers without hesitation, and he portrayed his misers in a realistic, sensual manner, and a psychological manner. His cheerful, playful personality, imbued with mockery and sarcasm, made him mix in his portrayal of them seriousness and frivolity and criticism of customs and morals with humor. He highlighted their movements, anxious or reassured looks, and psychological whims, and exposed their secrets and the hidden aspects of their homes and conversations, whether that was in their private or public affairs. He also described their psychology and all their conditions in this book, and was keen to comment on their eagerness, economy, and tricks in distracting guests from food. Anyone who carefully examines Al-Jahiz's stories will find in them short, comic plays and amusing, funny little anecdotes, such as the story of the Roosters of Marw, which he narrated on the authority of Thamamah ibn Ashras. Everywhere, the rooster picks up grains with his beak and then spits them out in front of the hens, except for his rooster, Marw, which robs the hens of the grains in their beaks. And like the story of Ramadan the Ahwazi sheikh on the ship, and how Ramadan was eating the chicken alone and did not leave the sheikh his companion on his journey, and how the sheikh grabbed Ramadan's beard with his left hand, took the chicken with his right hand, and began hitting Ramadan's head with it until it was cut off in his hand. The Book of Misers is also distinguished by being a humane book, even if it does not encompass all human aspects. Al-Jahiz dealt in it with people's wealth and studied their psychology, morals, instincts, and customs. He made his characters human beings who can exist in all times and places in his portrayal of beggars.

Diwan of Ibn Zaydoun

Author's name: Ibn Zaydoun

The Diwan of Ibn Zaydun is a collection of poems by the famous Andalusian poet Abu al-Walid Ahmad ibn Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Ghalib ibn Zaydun al-Makhzumi. This collection was compiled and published thanks to the efforts of the editor and professor Karam al-Bustani. The collection contains a variety of poems that range in subject matter from love poetry, longing, and descriptions of nature, to poems of complaint and reproach, to poems of praise and lamentation, in addition to poems of various other subjects. Ibn Zaydun is considered one of the greatest poets of Andalusia and a poet of classical Arabic. He was distinguished by his powerful expression, poetic structure, and linguistic excellence. His poetry was directed to his beloved Layla, who inspired his love poems and imbued them with romance and passion. Ibn Zaydun was known for being one of the most prominent poets of the Andalusian period and for his closeness to the Umayyad ruler, Abbad al-Mu'tadid, in Seville, considered one of the most important figures in government and culture during that period. Ibn Zaydoun's Diwan is considered one of the most valuable literary references in ancient Arabic literature, and represents an important cultural legacy that embodies the splendor and art of Arabic poetry in that historical period.

Diwan of Ka'b ibn Zuhair

Author's name: Zuhair ibn Abi Salma

The poet Ka'b bin Zuhair bin Abi Salma belonged to a family that was rich in poets. Every famous verse is beautiful, and most beautiful verses of poetry are famous. The criteria for "fame" are many, including frequent recitation of a verse, its repetition by people, its mention in literary books, or scholars' explicit declaration of its fame. As for the criteria of “beauty,” the most important are the quality of meaning, purity of expression, quality of style, and ease of pronunciation. Abu al-Atahiya is Ismail ibn al-Qasim ibn Suwayd ibn Kaysan, and was an Abbasid poet, known by the nickname Abu Ishaq. He was famous by the nickname "Abu al-Atahiya," which is said to have come as a result of a comment made by Caliph al-Mahdi on his personality due to his effeminate and pedantic behavior. It is noteworthy that Abu al-Atahiya associated with the caliphs in his youth and carried the zamelah of the effeminate, and he was inclined toward femininity and tenderness. He was known among the people for his beauty and good manners, and he would walk around Kufa carrying jars of vegetables. However, his poetic spirit prompted him to devote himself to poetry and abandon this profession, gaining widespread fame in the fields of poetry and literature. Abd al-Samad al-Mu'adhal was famous for his satirical poetry, described as being fine and solid. He was one of the great modern poets, and is compared to Abu Tammam in this respect. Abd al-Samad's poetry dealt with praise, elegy, satire, love poetry, and description. Among these was “Shanfari,” who was one of the most famous vagabonds in the pre-Islamic era and one of their most brilliant poets. However, narrators differed on his name. It was said that he was Thabit ibn Aws al-Azdi, or Amr ibn Malik al-Azdi. What concerns us in this area is what Shanfari left behind in poetry, but most of it was lost, as Professor Talal Harb says, and only a little of it remained. This reduction indicates his unique poetic talent. If Urwah ibn al-Ward led the vagabond groups, then Shanfari was their leader poetically without a competitor. This is because Shanfari not only informed us of the secrets of the vagabonds’ lives, their goals, and the methods of their vagabondage... but he also rose in his depiction of this life to the level of talented artistic creation, until his Lamiyyah became one of the most important documents of art and life expressing the model of living. In this context, the book presents the narrators’ disagreement over the attribution of “Al-Lamiyyah” to a pre-Islamic poet from the vagabonds, whether it was Al-Shanfari, Ta’abbat Sharran, or other pre-Islamic poets, with a presentation of the collection of poems by Al-Shanfari and two other vagabond poets: Al-Shilak bin Al-Salka and Amr bin Baraq, with a selection of their poems.

Diwan al-Hallaj

Author's name: Al-Hussein Al-Hallaj

Al-Hallaj is Al-Husayn ibn Mansur, born in the village of Al-Tur, northeast of Medina al-Bayda, a city in the Fars province of Iran, around 242 AH/857 AD. His family left Al-Tur and moved with him to central Iraq. His father worked in ginning and weaving cotton, and it is likely that the nickname Al-Hallaj was given to him because of his father's trade. Al-Hallaj spent his childhood moving from one school to another in Wasit, receiving whatever knowledge he could. He then moved to Tustar, where he studied with Sahl ibn Abdullah Al-Tasanri. He then moved to Basra, where he established a close relationship with Amr ibn Uthman Al-Makki, the Sufi, who dressed him in the Sufi cloak. He then left Basra for Baghdad, where he met Sheikh Al-Junayd. He then went to Qala to perform the Hajj pilgrimage, where he spent a full year practicing the most strenuous Sufi exercises. He subjected his body to the most arduous forms of torture, consuming only bread and water as a food, and exposing his body to the scorching sun or to heavy rain. When Al Hallaj returned from a small number of visits, he appeared to people as a confident man. His followers increased and he chose Sufism as his philosophy. He had discovered the divine truth, which had become clear to him since its revelation to Moses, peace be upon him, on Mount Sinai, through Jesus, peace be upon him, and his death, and through the Quran and the unified Islamic creed. Everything that contradicts this truth is illusion and misguidance. However, this philosophy, which Al Hallaj expressed in practice, did not satisfy the jurist Muhammad ibn Dawud, as he saw it as contradicting the teachings of Islam, which recognizes only the wise revelation. He therefore brought Al Hallaj's case to court, requesting that he be tried before the people and the jurists. However, the Shafi'i judge, Abu al-Abbas ibn Surayj, who was well-versed in Sufi thought, refused to condemn him, saying, "He is a man whose condition is hidden from me and I have nothing to say about him." Believing that Sufism was not part of the core work of the Sharia courts, and given the rebellions embodied in the Zanj movement and the Qarmatians movement during that period, and given that Al-Hallaj's revolutionary tendencies were growing stronger with the escalation of injustices, the Abbasids feared Al-Hallaj and decided to get rid of him for fear of jeopardizing their personal interests and their political system. A trial was held for him, which sentenced him to death by beheading. However, Al-Hallaj's philosophy remains a shining page in human heritage, reflecting the virtues of that Arab Muslim philosopher whose struggle transcended sectarian and national boundaries. His tragedy remains a fresh resource for minds in all times and places, and a source of inspiration for all free people of the world. Within the folds of this book is his collection of poems, which was the first to be compiled by the French Orientalist Louis Massignon in Paris in 1955. This collection was followed by Al-Hallaj's stories and his Taseen.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0603/9335/7466/files/h6yotWMRy4j6VquptcWGL87dRHcZDjCXnw0aW3O1.jpg?v=1750516856
9780011270982
Diwan of Hassan ibn Thabit

Diwan of Hassan ibn Thabit

Author's name: Hassan ibn Thabit

Hassan ibn Thabit was most likely born in 60 AH. It is worth noting that Ibn Burd's collection of poems did not require an exhaustive explanation from the editor, but rather a proper reading of the manuscripts that contained the collection. Therefore, we find that the editor was brief in his explanation, due to what he found in Bashar ibn Burd's poetry of a biography in presentation, ease in drawing poetic images, and the repetition of some situations and actions and the way of expressing them. By referring to the biography of this poet, we find that he is considered one of the veterans of the Umayyad and Abbasid states. Critics and historians have greatly praised Al-Afwah's poetic and tribal stature, and have considered him one of the most famous Arab knights in terms of strength and character. They have seen his superiority over other poets in words and descriptions that had never been used before, demonstrating their admiration for his poetic talent. Most of his poetry was about wisdom, enthusiasm, and chivalry, and he is considered one of the wise poets. Most of his poetry was full of bragging about his heroism and the heroism of his people in wars in which they achieved overwhelming victories. In addition, he used precise imagery that was rare in the pre-Islamic era. His poetry was full of difficult vocabulary, which added to the richness of the language dictionaries, and it is rare to find a linguistic dictionary that does not include dozens of poetic examples of him. In the folds of this book, the researcher recorded what he collected of poems and verses of Al-Afwah Al-Azdi, attaching to that his study on the Arabs of the North and the Arabs of the South, with a translation of the poet and a manuscript of the collection, then his collection with a translation of the poet from the Book of Songs and the Book of Institutes of Textual Texts.

Diwan of the knight prince Osama bin Munqidh

Author's name: Osama bin Munqidh

The Diwan of Usama ibn Munqidh is considered one of the most important works of medieval Arabic literature.
